PAASA helps South Australian seniors live independently with greater safety. Eligible South Australians can receive financial assistance to help cover the cost of a MePACS personal alarm system with 24/7 monitoring.

Who is eligible for PAASA

Permanent residents of South Australia who:
Are aged 75+  (65+ for First Nations people)
Have a Centrelink or DVA Pensioner Concession Card
Meet the additional clinical, functional and social requirements
Have been assessed by My Aged Care as one of the following:
Approved for Support at Home (SAH) Classification 1 with Low Assistive Technology (AT)
Approved for a level 1 Home Care Package (HCP)
Approved for a Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)
Not eligible for SAH, CHSP, or a HCP

Home Alarm with Falls Pendant
Cost of alarm and monitoring fees are fully covered by PAASA.
The home alarm works around the home and garden and includes a waterproof pendant with falls detection.
About the Falls Pendant:
The falls pendant can detect sudden hard falls and automatically raise an alert to MePACS.

Please note that some falls may not be detected, i.e. a roll or slow slump to the ground or if the fall was broken by an object, such as a chair.

How to apply for a PAASA funded alarm

You can begin your PAASA application only after you have been assessed by My Aged Care and have received information about your support plan.
Complete PAASA application
Complete the PAASA Application for Approval form, using the information in your My Aged Care support plan.
A registered health professional must complete Section G.
Submit application form to PAASA
The completed form can be submitted to PAASA by email or post. It must be submitted within 12 weeks of the registered health professional signing Section G.
Choose your alarm
Once you receive a Letter of Approval from PAASA you can choose your preferred alarm from a list of approved PAASA providers.
Order your alarm
To order your MePACS alarm,
please contact us within six weeks from your PAASA approval date. Orders are processed within 2 business days.

PAASA Funded Alarm FAQs

What are the additional criteria for PAASA?

A registered health professional must certify that you meet all the clinical and functional criteria.

Clinical criteria

You must:

  • be a high fall risk
  • suffer from an ongoing major medical condition that requires an emergency response.

Functional criteria

You must:

  • have sufficient physical and cognitive function to wear and operate the personal alert system
  • be willing to wear the alert system and activate it if necessary.

Social criteria

At least one of the following must apply:

  • you live alone
  • you are alone for a minimum of 5 consecutive hours, 4 times a week
  • you live exclusively with someone who is unable to communicate using a phone in an emergency.

Who is a ‘registered health professional’?

The health professional you select must be one of these:

- A registered medical practitioner or general practitioner (GP)

- A nurse practitioner or registered nurse

- A registered occupational therapist

You must submit your application within 12 weeks of the registered health professional completing Section G.

Which MePACS alarms can be accessed through PAASA?

The MePACS home alarm with falls detection pendant and the Solo Connect watch alarm can both be accessed through PAASA for eligible South Australians.

As the cost for the Solo Connect exceeds the amount funded by PAASA, self contribution is required to complete the purchase.

How much will PAASA contribute towards the purchase and installation of a personal alarm

PAASA will contribute up to $380 towards the purchase and installation of an approved personal alarm system.
If the total cost exceeds $380, the client will be responsible for paying the difference directly to the personal alarm supplier.

Only one PAASA-funded alert system is available per household.

How much will PAASA contribute towards monitoring costs?

PAASA will contribute up to $200 per year towards monthly monitoring costs. The amount will be paid directly to your approved personal alarm supplier.
If the total monitoring charges exceed $200, you will be responsible for paying the difference directly to the supplier.

Am I eligible to apply for PAASA if I have already bought a personal alert system?

If you bought a personal alarm over five years ago, you may qualify to apply for an upgraded version.
