Frequently Asked Questions
How does the service work?
The service works by sending a signal down the telephone line to MEPACS. The signal can be identified by a unique code and transmits a message to the Monitoring Service Team computer screens so they can take action.
How far does my pendant work from the alarm unit in my home?
The Pendant range is 50-70 metres free-to-air. This range covers most suburban house blocks. Our installers will always test the pendant range at the time of installation.
What happens if I press the pendant accidentally?
We sometimes receive accidental pendant signals. We will always call back just to make sure our clients are OK. It’s no problem – we’d rather know you’re OK.
What if I have no contacts?
Additional Response Services are available who can act as your contacts in the instance you have no one living close to you. Simply call us to discuss who offers the service in your area.
Should I wear my pendant in the shower or bath?
You should always wear your pendant and as it is water resistant you can wear it in the shower or bath.
Can two people have a pendant with only one unit?
Yes, you can have more than one pendant on the one unit at one time – you can have up to 8 pendants.
What happens if the power goes out – should I call MEPACS?
The MEPACS Alarm Unit has a battery back-up that lasts for up to 3 days. If the power goes out your alarm unit will automatically change to battery back-up power supply.
Who can be a Contact?
Contacts should be people who are well known to you as you will need to give them a key to your home. Contacts are usually family or friends who live within 30 minutes of your home.
What if none of my Contacts are available?
If none of your Contacts are available the ambulance service or other nominated 24-hour service will be called. We recommend that you ensure that you are covered for ambulance expenses.
Do I have to pay for the telephone calls from the Alarm Unit?
No. The alarm calls are all received on Freecall 1800 numbers. There are no additional telephone call charges for using the alarm.
Is financial assistance available?
Some people may be eligible for funding in Victoria through the Department of Human Services. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs also provides some funding to Gold Card Holders. Eligibility criteria apply to both types of funding and an assessment is required if applying for funding.
